Hi. This is Ray McDonald and Nancy Beardsley with words and phrases from the English USA worksheet for Lesson 52. We will discuss how the parts of speech are used together:

[Basic Sentence Structures]

This sentence is made from a verb plus a noun:
    Verb + noun [動詞 + 名詞]

Open the door.

ドアをあけなさい。


This one has a verb plus an adverb:

    Verb + adverb [動詞 + 副詞]

Turn right. 右に曲がりなさい。

 

These sentences are made with a noun or pronoun plus a "be"-verb plus another noun or pronoun:

    Noun (or pronoun) + "be"-verb + noun (or pronoun)
  [名詞(または代名詞) + be動詞 + 名詞(または代名詞)]

Martin Learner is a reporter. マーティン・ラーナーはレポーターです。
  He is a father. 彼は父親です。


A noun or pronoun plus a "be"-verb plus an adjective make sentence like these:

    Noun (or pronoun) + "be"-verb + adjective
  [名詞(または代名詞) + be動詞 + 形容詞]

The children are intelligent. その子供たちは頭がよい。
  They are busy. 彼らは忙しい。


A noun or pronoun plus a "be"-verb plus an adverb produces this sentence:

    Noun (or pronoun) + "be"-verb + adverb
  [名詞(または代名詞) + be動詞 + 副詞]

It is there. それはあそこにあります。

 


These sentences are built from a noun or pronoun plus a verb:

    Noun (or pronoun) + verb

Parents listen. 両親たちは聴きます。
  They learn. 彼らは学びます。


A noun or pronoun plus a verb plus another noun or pronoun makes sentences like these:

    Noun (or pronoun) + verb + noun (or pronoun)
  [名詞(または代名詞) + 動詞 + 名詞(または代名詞)]

The woman drives a car. その女性は車を運転します。
  We read the book. 我々はその本を読んだ。


Using a noun or pronoun plus a verb plus an adverb gives you this sentence:

    Noun (or pronoun) + verb + adverb
    [名詞(または代名詞) + 動詞 + 副詞]

You live there. あなた(がた)はあそこに住んでいます。

 

A noun plus a "be"-verb plus a verb plus a noun, pronoun or adverb produces these sentences:

    Noun + "be"-verb + verb + (noun, pronoun, adverb)
  [名詞 + be動詞 + 動詞 + (名詞、代名詞、副詞)]

The boy is buying a shirt. その男の子はシャツを買っています。
  People were visiting them. 人々は彼らを訪ねていました。
  You are going downstairs. あなた(がた)は下階に行きます。

 

A question word plus a "be"-verb plus a noun or pronoun makes sentences like these:

    Question word + "be"-verb + noun (or pronoun)
  [疑問詞 + be動詞 + 名詞(または代名詞)]

Who are you? どちら様ですか?
  What was that? それは何ですか?
  Where is Eileen? アイリーンはどこにいますか?
  How were they? 彼らはどんな様子でしたか?
  When was it? それはいつのことでしたか?

 

A question verb plus a noun or pronoun plus a verb plus a noun or adverb raises different questions:

    Question verb + noun (or pronoun) + verb + (noun, adverb)
    [疑問詞 + 名詞(または代名詞) + 動詞 + (名詞、副詞)]

Does Mr. Learner drive a car? ラーナーさんは車を運転しますか?
  Do they live here? 彼らはここに住んでいますか?
  Did the teachers study the animals? 先生たちは動物たちを研究しましたか?
