English USA
Lesson 82, Part 1

1.

進行中の行動を説明することを学びます。マーティンは以前取材をしたことのある歯科医のところへ歯を診てもらいに行きます。

This is English USA, on the Voice of America. Now, Lesson 82, Part 1.

DENTIST:

How are you, Martin?

MARTIN:

Fine, I think.

DENTIST:

Any problems with your teeth?

MARTIN:

I think I have a problem with one.

DENTIST:

Tell me which one.

MARTIN:

It's on the right side. All the way back.

DENTIST:

Is it an upper or lower tooth?

MARTIN:

The lower right side.

DENTIST:

Let's take a look. Open your mouth.

MARTIN:

What are you doing?

DENTIST:

Sorry. I dropped the mirror.

MARTIN:

Isn't that bad luck?

DENTIST:

Not for a dentist. Open up. I'm looking at that tooth. Is it this one?

MARTIN:

Yesss!

DENTIST:

OK. I'm tapping on the side. Does that hurt?

MARTIN:

Nooo. Now what are you doing?

DENTIST:

I'm just looking.

MARTIN:

Can you see anything wrong?

DENTIST:

The filling is cracked.

MARTIN:

Cracked! That's bad, isn't it?

DENTIST:

It's not good. I'll have to fill it. But first I have to take out the old filling. Do you want something to stop the pain?

MARTIN:

Of course.

DENTIST:

All right, I'm ready. Open your mouth wide.

MARTIN:

What is that?

DENTIST:

I'm giving you something to stop the pain.

MARTIN:

OK. Just a minute. I'm getting ready.

DENTIST:

Are you all right?

MARTIN:

I'm fine. Go ahead.

DENTIST:

It won't hurt. I'm putting something on first. Then I'm going to put the needle in. Here goes. Now, that didn't hurt, did it?

MARTIN:

No, not at all.

DENTIST:

I'm going to wait a few minutes. Would you like something to read?

MARTIN:

Yes, please.

DENTIST:

I'm drilling out the old filling now.

DENTIST:

Just a little more. Can you feel that?

MARTIN:

Hunh-uh.

DENTIST:

I'm washing it out now. There, that looks good. You can relax now.

MARTIN:

You're not finished, are you?

DENTIST:

I'm finished with the drilling. Unless I find something else. I haven't checked everything. First, I'm going to fill this tooth. Relax a minute.

MARTIN:

How long have you been a dentist, Dr. Jansen?

DENTIST:

About six years. I was working in Southern Maryland before I moved to Baltimore. I joined Dr. Cohen here about a year ago.

MARTIN:

Is Dr. Cohen going to retire?

DENTIST:

Yes, but not soon. In a few years. He doesn't want to work so hard.

MARTIN:

That's nice for both of you.

DENTIST:

Yes, it is. OK. I think we're ready.
