This is English USA, on the Voice of America.
Now, Lesson 69, Part 2. |
| |
FEMALE: |
Hello. |
MARTIN: |
Hello. Is this the Native American Cultural Arts Council? |
FEMALE: |
Yes, it is. How can I help you? |
MARTIN: |
This is Martin Learner. I'm a reporter for the Voice of America. I'm
interested in powwows. Can you answer some questions? |
FEMALE: |
I'll try. |
MARTIN: |
Where are powwows held? |
FEMALE: |
Really, all over the country. Of course they're held mostly near
where Indians live. |
MARTIN: |
Do
you say Indians? |
FEMALE: |
Or
what? |
MARTIN: |
Native Americans. |
FEMALE: |
Oh,
I understand. A lot of people prefer the term Native American. I
don't mind Indian. It depends on your attitude. |
MARTIN: |
I
have a good attitude. |
FEMALE: |
That's good. |
MARTIN: |
Can
anyone attend a powwow? |
FEMALE: |
Most of them. They are to share information. They're educational.
MARTIN: |
I
want to attend one or two. Is that possible? |
FEMALE: |
Where are you? |
MARTIN: |
I'm
in Washington, DC. |
FEMALE: |
Could you go to the West or Southwest? |
MARTIN: |
Yes, I could. |
FEMALE: |
When could you go? |
MARTIN: |
I
could go anytime. The sooner the better. |
FEMALE: |
I'm
checking the calendar. Could you go to South Dakota, or Montana, or
Wyoming? |
MARTIN: |
Yes, I could. |
FEMALE: |
Could I call you back in a few minutes? I want to check some dates
and places. Will you be there for a few minutes? |
MARTIN: |
Yes, I will. |
FEMALE: |
What is your telephone number? |
FEMALE 2: |
Martin, may I interrupt? |
MARTIN: |
Of
course, come in. I'm waiting for a phone call. |
FEMALE 2: |
Did
you find out about powwows? |
MARTIN: |
That's what the phone call is about. I reached the Native American
Cultural Arts Council. |
FEMALE 2: |
Could they help you? |
MARTIN: |
I
think so. They are looking at the calendar. |
FEMALE 2: |
Is
there anything I can do? |
MARTIN: |
Not
now. Perhaps later. Maybe we could talk after my phone call. I would
like your ideas about the story. |
FEMALE 2: |
OK.
I could meet after three o'clock. |
MARTIN: |
Thanks. |
