This is English USA, on the Voice of
America. Now, Lesson 67, Part 1. |

CAPTAIN: |
Come in. Come in. Good afternoon. |
MARTIN: |
Good afternoon, Captain. |
CAPTAIN: |
How are you? Fine, I hope. |
MARTIN: |
Yes, thanks. How are you? |
CAPTAIN: |
Great. |
MARTIN: |
I'm Martin Learner. |
CAPTAIN: |
Yes, I know. You're the reporter. |
MARTIN: |
Yes, that's right. We talked last month. May I record? |
CAPTAIN: |
Sure. |
MARTIN: |
May I put the recorder on this table? |
CAPTAIN: |
Ah--no. Could you put it here, please? |
MARTIN: |
Of course. This is fine. |
CAPTAIN: |
What can I do for you, Martin? |
MARTIN: |
I
want to write some stories. |
CAPTAIN: |
What about? |
MARTIN: |
I
want to write about the planes and helicopters, and the men.
CAPTAIN: |
Good. I've asked Lieutenant Lucas to show you around. |
MARTIN: |
May I look at the planes? |
CAPTAIN: |
OK. Look at the planes. Talk to the pilots. |
MARTIN: |
May I look around the ship? |
CAPTAIN: |
Of course. Some parts of the ship are off limits. |
MARTIN: |
What do you mean? |
CAPTAIN: |
You can't go some places. You can't see everything. |
MARTIN: |
May I ask why? |
CAPTAIN: |
For security. It's a nuclear ship, you know. Lieutenant Lucas will
keep you out of trouble. |
CAPTAIN: |
Would you like a drink? |
MARTIN: |
May I have some coffee? |
CAPTAIN: |
Sure. What would you like to see, Martin? |
MARTIN: |
I
write about people usually. Is it all right to talk to the men?
CAPTAIN: |
What about? |
MARTIN: |
How they live on the ship. |
CAPTAIN: |
That's fine. |
MARTIN: |
May I ask them about their work? |
CAPTAIN: |
I
don't mind. They won't tell you any secrets. |
MARTIN: |
I
want to describe their lives on the ship. What they do every day.
CAPTAIN: |
Ah, good. Here's our coffee. |
