1.

This is English USA, on the Voice of America. Now, Lesson 64, Part 1.

MARTIN:

May I record?

HANK:

Sure.

MARTIN:

What's going on here?

HANK:

Do you know anything about racing?

MARTIN:

No, not really. I know this is the Indianapolis 500 race.
Explain where we are.

HANK:

This is the pit area. We are inside the oval race track. This is where the cars make pit stops during the race.

MARTIN:

What do you mean pit stops?

HANK:

We service the cars.

MARTIN:

Do all of the cars come to this pit area?

HANK:

No, this is for only one car. Each racecar has its own area
and its own pit crew.

MARTIN:

What happens during the race?

HANK:

The driver comes in here.

MARTIN:

When?

HANK:

When he has a problem. When he needs to come in. We take care of any problems. We change the tires. We add fuel, make repairs, that kind of thing.

MARTIN:

Your driver is Rick Sanderson.

HANK:

Right.

MARTIN:

How long have you worked with him?

HANK:

We started together. I helped build his first car. That was
six years ago.

MARTIN:

And now you supervise the pit crew.

HANK:

Yes. I'm the supervisor.

MARTIN:

The Indianapolis 500 race runs every year. Do you have the same crew every year?

HANK:

Some of the crew. We're a team. Some of us have worked
together for six years. A few men are new every year.

MARTIN:

What does the team do?

HANK:

You mean when we're not racing? The team includes the
owners--

MARTIN:

Excuse me. Doesn't the driver own the car?

HANK:

No, no. Not any more. The cars are too expensive.

MARTIN:

Go on please.

HANK:

The team includes the owners, the crew, and the driver. The crewmembers are the technical workers of the team.

MARTIN:

Doesn't the driver know the technical things about his car?

HANK:

He knows a lot. But it's our job to make sure everything
works for the driver. The car has to work perfectly.

MARTIN:

Tell me about your co-workers.

HANK:

Each man has his own job.

MARTIN:

Do you have women in your pit crew?

HANK:

Sometimes. We don't have any women this year.

MARTIN:

Are there any women drivers?

HANK:

There was a woman driver in 1977 and 78. She came in ninth place in 1978.

MARTIN:

Is the driver the boss?

HANK:

On the racetrack. He decides when to come into the pit for
fuel, for new tires, for any problems he might have.

MARTIN:

How long are the pit stops?

HANK:

Just a few seconds. The driver can't make too many pit
stops. But he has to make some. Rick's coming in now. Stand over there and watch the crew.

2.

HANK:

Each racecar has its own pit crew.

MARTIN:

You supervise the pit crew?

HANK:

Yes, I'm the supervisor.

We're a team.

The crewmembers are the technical workers of the team.

MARTIN:

Is the driver the boss?

3.

"worker"は一般に仕事をする人すべてに使います。"team"は密接に関係を持ちながら一緒に仕事をする小さなグループのことです。ここでは"crew"という語はカーレースで働く"team"の人たちのことです。 "boss"は口語的なことばで仕事に従事する人たちを監督したり、責任を持つ人のことです。これからマーティンがあなたに質問をしますのでそれに答えてください。

MARTIN:

Are you a supervisor?

YOU:

[Yes, I am a supervisor.] or [No, I am not a supervisor.]

MARTIN:

Who is your supervisor?

YOU:

[My supervisor is ------.]

Lesson 64, Part 1はこれで終わりです。
