ZULU:

OK. We can talk now. I have a few minutes.

MARTIN:

Good. Do you have to perform again?

ZULU:

Yes. Next time I work with the elephants.

MARTIN:

Where are you from in Africa?

ZULU:

I'm not from Africa. I'm from New Jersey. Jersey City, New Jersey.

MARTIN:

I thought Zulu--

ZULU:

My real name isn't Zulu. Zulu is my circus name.

MARTIN:

What may I call you?

ZULU:

Zulu. I've been Zulu a long time. I wanted a name that sounded African. You know, jungles and animals. I always wanted to work with animals.

MARTIN:

How long have you been with the circus?

ZULU:

Twenty-five years. I joined the circus when I was sixteen years old. I told them I was twenty.

MARTIN:

Why did you join the circus?

ZULU:

I wanted to leave home. I wanted to see things. I wanted to leave Jersey City and see America.

MARTIN:

What did you do in the circus?

ZULU:

Everything. First, I just cleaned. I was a clown, then a musician. Then I worked with the animal trainer. I worked for him for ten years. I took care of the animals. Then I started training some of the animals too. Now I train and perform with the animals.

MARTIN:

Are there many Afro-Americans in the circus?

ZULU:

Not many. In this circus, there is only one black family--my family.

MARTIN:

How many are there in your family?

ZULU:

Let's see. Four children. My wife. And her mother.

MARTIN:

Are they all in the circus?

ZULU:

One son is in the army. My wife and her mother and the other children are in the circus.

MARTIN:

What does your wife do?

ZULU:

You can ask her. I have to go now. We can talk later.

MARTIN:

Thanks. Where is your wife?

ZULU:

She's the woman standing on that white horse.

SALAMA:

Hello. I'm Salama.

MARTIN:

Is that your real name?

SALAMA:

No. My real name is Julia. But everyone calls me Salama now.

MARTIN:

Why Salama?

SALAMA:

My horse is an Arabian horse. I wanted a name that sounded Arabian.

MARTIN:

Are you from New Jersey?

SALAMA:

No, I'm from Kenya.

MARTIN:

Are there circuses in Kenya?

SALAMA:

No, not really. But of course there are animals. I always lived around animals. My father was a park ranger. He liked all animals. I came to America when my father died. My brother already lived here.

MARTIN:

Where did you meet your husband?

SALAMA:

At the circus of course. I didn't like living in the city. There weren't any animals.

MARTIN:

What does your mother do?

SALAMA:

She takes care of all the costumes.

MARTIN:

What does that mean?

SALAMA:

She makes sure they are clean and repaired. Some of the costumes are very expensive. She has them packed for the trip to the next town. Things like that.
