[The
Thane of Fife had a wife. Where is she now? What, will these
hands---] |
MARTIN: |
Hello. |
BETH: |
Ahhh. You frightened me! Good afternoon. |
MARTIN: |
Lady Macbeth. I should be frightened. |
BETH: |
Not in this scene. I'm still practicing my big scenes. We open
tonight. |
MARTIN: |
Don't let me interrupt. I'm looking for John Keasy. He's your
director, isn't he? |
BETH: |
Yes. He's in the theater. I saw him a few minutes ago. |
MARTIN: |
I
won't bother you now, but may I ask you some questions later?
BETH: |
Of course. Come backstage. We can talk there. |
MARTIN: |
Thanks. |
MARTIN: |
Good afternoon. I'm Martin Learner. I'm looking for the director,
John Keasy. |
JOHN: |
That's me. I'm John Keasy. You're the reporter? |
MARTIN: |
That's right. I'm Martin Learner. Is this a good time to talk?
JOHN: |
It's never a good time to talk. |
MARTIN: |
Are you worried? |
JOHN: |
Yes, of course. |
MARTIN: |
Why? |
JOHN: |
I
never feel ready. It's never good enough. We need more time. The
lights aren't right. The sound isn't good. The actors aren't loud
enough. The audience won't come. The actors will get sick. The
audience won't like it. |
MARTIN: |
Will it be bad? |
JOHN: |
No. It never is. It won't be perfect, but it won't be bad. But
it's OK. I have time to talk now. |
MARTIN: |
I
need some information about the actors. Who is that on the stage?
JOHN: |
He's playing Macbeth. |
MARTIN: |
What's his name? |
JOHN: |
His name is Paul Major. The man coming on stage now is playing
Banquo. |
MARTIN: |
What's his name? |
JOHN: |
His name is Winston Fishburn. |
MARTIN: |
Could you show me around the theater? |
JOHN: |
Sure. The auditorium is small. It has about 250 seats. The seats
are new this year. |
MARTIN: |
The stage is large, isn't it? |
JOHN: |
It's large for a summer theater. We can perform Shakespeare. We
can perform large musicals too. This summer we are doing Kiss Me
Kate. |
MARTIN: |
Have you directed a musical before? |
JOHN: |
No. That's why we're doing Kiss Me Kate. It's based on Shakespeare
you know. I've directed Shakespeare many times. We also had the
costumes. It won't cost much. |
MARTIN: |
Is cost a problem? |
JOHN: |
Always. Money is our biggest problem. We don't make any money in
the summer. |
MARTIN: |
Do your actors receive a salary? |
JOHN: |
Most of them. They are professional actors. A few are students.
They don't receive a salary, but we pay their expenses. |
MARTIN: |
What kind of expenses? |
JOHN: |
Food and lodging. Excuse me Paul. This is Martin Learner. He's the
reporter. |
MARTIN: |
Hi. Don't let me interrupt. I'll talk to you later. |
