  This is English USA, on the Voice of America. Now, Lesson 50, Part 1.
   

 

MARTIN:

Excuse me. How much are the onions?

 

MALE:

The yellow ones or the white ones?

 

MARTIN:

No, the red ones.

 

MALE:

Forty cents a pound.

 

MARTIN:

How much are the white ones?

 

MALE:

The same. Forty cents a pound. All the onions are forty cents a pound.

 

MARTIN:

I want two pounds please.

 

MALE:

Do you want anything else?

 

MARTIN:

I want some potatoes.

 

MALE:

Red or white?

 

MARTIN:

The large white ones. How much are they?

 

MALE:

They're a dollar a box.

 

MARTIN:

OK. One box. That's all, thank you.

 

MALE:

That's a dollar and eighty cents.

 

MARTIN:

Here.

 

 

 

 

MARTIN:

Hi. Your vegetables look nice.

 

FEMALE:

They are nice. I have nice green beans and new peas.

 

MARTIN:

You have two kinds of peas.

 

FEMALE:

Try them. I have carrots too. And broccoli.

 

MARTIN:

How much are the beans?

 

FEMALE:

The peas and beans are a dollar a bag.

 

MARTIN:

How much is the broccoli?

 

FEMALE:

Everything is one dollar. The broccoli is a dollar a bunch.

 

MARTIN:

That's easy.

 

FEMALE:

Where are you from?

 

MARTIN:

I'm from Baltimore. Where are you from?

 

FEMALE:

I live in the country.

 

MARTIN:

Do you like to garden?

 

FEMALE:

Sure. My husband and I both like to garden. What do you do?

 

MARTIN:

I'm a reporter.

 

FEMALE:

Do you want anything else?

 

MARTIN:

No. I'm going to look around.

 

FEMALE:

OK. Thanks.

 

MARTIN:

See you.

 

FEMALE:

I'm here every Saturday.

 

 

 

 

MALE:

How are you this morning?

 

MARTIN:

Good morning. I'm fine thanks. How are you?

 

MALE:

Good.

 

MARTIN:

I want some tomatoes.

 

MALE:

They aren't very good. They're too green.

 

MARTIN:

That's OK. They look good to me.

 

MALE:

These are the best. They're twenty cents a pound.

 

MARTIN:

I want three pounds.

 

MALE:

See that woman over there.

 

MARTIN:

Which one?

 

MALE:

The one with the red hat. She has some nice tomatoes. Hers are better than mine.

 

MARTIN:

Thanks. I'm going to look.

 

 

 

 

MARTIN:

Excuse me. How much are the cookies?

 

FEMALE:

They're three dollars.

 

MARTIN:

Uuuh. That's a lot.

 

FEMALE:

They're very good. They're the best cookies at the market.

 

MARTIN:

How much is the cake?

 

FEMALE:

Seven dollars.

 

MARTIN:

Wow.

 

FEMALE:

It's the best.
