1.

 

Part 1に引き続き、ほしいもの必要なものを言い表すことを学びます。マーティ ンは家族と自宅で朝食をとっています。妻のアイリーンに代わって買い物に行くことになったマーティンは家族と買うものについて話します。

MARTIN:

Sue, are you ready for school.

 

SUE:

Yes.

 

EILEEN:

Please finish your breakfast. We need to go.

 

SUE:

Are you taking me today, mama?

 

EILEEN:

Yes. We need to go in five minutes.

 

SUE:

OK. Do I have to eat this?

 

EILEEN:

Yes, please. It's good for you.

 

MARTIN:

Alan, does your head ache?

 

ALAN:

No. I'm tired.

 

MARTIN:

Do you need anything from the store?

 

ALAN:

No. Yes. Something to drink.

 

MARTIN:

What do you want?

 

ALAN:

Lemon soda.

 

MARTIN:

Right. Eileen, anything else?

 

EILEEN:

Did you write vegetables?

 

MARTIN:

Yes, I did. What kind of vegetables do you want?

 

EILEEN:

Green vegetables. Green beans. Peas. Broccoli. Any green
vegetable.

 

MARTIN:

Do you want something for salad?

 

EILEEN:

Did you write tomatoes?

 

MARTIN:

Yes.

 

EILEEN:

Do you want lettuce?

 

MARTIN:

It's OK.

 

EILEEN:

Look at the store. Find something interesting.

 

SUE:

Do I have to eat salad?

 

EILEEN:

Don't talk about salad now. Finish your breakfast.

 

MARTIN:

Do we need coffee?

 

EILEEN:

Oh, yes! And we need sugar.

 

MARTIN:

Do we need tea?

 

EILEEN:

Not today. We have some.

 

MARTIN:

Do we need flour?

 

EILEEN:

I don't know. Please look.

 

MARTIN:

Yes, we need flour. Do you want brown or white flour?

 

EILEEN:

Both.

 

SUE:

I need some cookies. The cookies are finished.

 

EILEEN:

Finished?!

 

SUE:

Alan ate them.

 

ALAN:

No, I didn't.

 

EILEEN:

How many did you eat yesterday?

 

SUE:

A few.

 

EILEEN:

How many?

 

SUE:

Some.

 

EILEEN:

How many?

 

SUE:

Five. Alan ate a lot.

 

EILEEN:

Alan, how many did you eat?

 

ALAN:

I don't know. A lot.

 

MARTIN:

That's too many cookies. No more cookies this week. What
else do we need?

 

ALAN:

May I have some soup?

 

EILEEN:

Of course. We have some. What kind do you want?

 

ALAN:

Tomato.

 

MARTIN:

OK. Tomato soup. Anything else? What do you want for dinner tonight?

 

SUE:

Can we have pizza?

 

EILEEN:

That's a good idea.

 

MARTIN:

Do we have everything we need for pizza?

 

EILEEN:

Sure.

"want"は「〜がほしい」、"need"は「〜が必要」という意味です。ほしいものがすべて必要とは限りません。また、必要なものがすべてほしいものとは限りません。"want"と"need"の違いを意識して次の会話を聴いてください。

 

MARTIN:

Do you need anything from the store?

 

ALAN:

Yes.

 

MARTIN:

What do you want?

 

ALAN:

Lemon soda.

 

MARTIN:

What do you want for dinner tonight?

 

SUE:

Can we have pizza?

 

MARTIN:
