Lesson 44, Part 1

1.

目の前にない場所を聞き手にわかりやすいように説明することを学びます。マーティはタクシーに乗って空港へ向かっています。空港に向かう途中タクシーの運転手と話をします。

This is English USA, on the Voice of America. Now, Lesson 44, Part 1.

MARTIN:

How far is the airport?

DRIVER:

About fifteen miles. Where are you going today?

MARTIN:

I'm going home.

DRIVER:

Where is your home?

MARTIN:

Baltimore, Maryland. Do you know Baltimore?

DRIVER:

No. I never travel.

MARTIN:

It's a nice city. I like it. It's not too big. And it's not too small.

DRIVER:

Do you have a family?

MARTIN:

Yes, I do. I have a wife and two children.

DRIVER:

Is Baltimore a good place for children?

MARTIN:

I think so. We have some excellent schools.

DRIVER:

Do you live in a house?

MARTIN:

No, we live downtown. We have an apartment. We like busy cities.

DRIVER:

Do you like apartments?

MARTIN:

Yes, but it's too small. Our children are getting big. We need a bigger place. We're going to buy a house.

DRIVER:

In the city?

MARTIN:

Yes, we want to live downtown. We want a house. But we want a small house.

DRIVER:

What does Baltimore look like?

MARTIN:

That's a hard question. It's an old city. It has an interesting harbor.

DRIVER:

Is it on the ocean?

MARTIN:

No. It's on Chesapeake Bay. It's a very busy port. Huge ships come to Baltimore.

DRIVER:

I didn't know that.

MARTIN:

It has a harbor for tourists too.

DRIVER:

What do you mean?

MARTIN:

The new harbor is for the big ships. The old harbor is for small boats. Tourists come to the hotels, restaurants, and shops. It's very popular.

DRIVER:

Is it fun?

MARTIN:

And educational. Children love it.

DRIVER:

Do you live near the harbor?

MARTIN:

Not far. We can see two harbors from our apartment.

DRIVER:

That's wonderful. Do you work in Baltimore?

MARTIN:

No, I don't. I work in Washington.

DRIVER:

Washington, D.C. Right?

MARTIN:

Right. I'm a reporter.

DRIVER:

What do people do in Baltimore?

MARTIN:

Baltimore is like many cities. It has factories.

DRIVER:

And it has the port.

MARTIN:

Yes. Many people work in shipping.

DRIVER:

I like the ocean. I'm going to move to California.

MARTIN:

When are you going to move?

DRIVER:

When I get enough money. Do you travel to California?

MARTIN:

Yes, I do. I travel to Southern and Northern California.

DRIVER:

Which one do you like?

MARTIN:

I like them both. Southern California is warm and sunny.
